~ Ayakashi ~ Japanese Classic Horror - 01

With the horror genre you are expected to be thrilled, scared and horrified - sadly the latter is expected with how dull and utterly not scary this anime is. It's more like a feudal Japanese Soap Opera! I have come to the conclusion that this Japanese 'classic' horror is definately not what it says on the tin!

Yep, in those days women were always best in a brothel, according to this anime!Love at first sight?

After witnessing a rap group murdering the title sequence, we are introduced to an old man who wants to tell a really scary story. Infact this story is so scary, that he can only write it while possessed! Meanwhile I was possessed by the sheer boredom. ;)
This epic tale is set in Feudal Japan between 14th-17th century I'd say! Women then were only good in brothels and men just acted like Yakuza thugs! Here we meet a young woman who falls in love with her 'bit of rough' Ronin named Iemon. But alas, their tragic love is marred by the woman's father who obviously has sense and see Iemon like the bad egg he is.
So Iemon and other thug callously murder poor father-in-law and then each get the woman they want! FOR GREAT JUSTICE! :D Fast forward a year later and Iemon is getting bored of his woman - she just had his baby and he's sick of it already! He then goes on the prowl and meets a loli on the street, who sends her maid to give him a 'gift'. This gift is poison for his poor, hard working and ever suffering wife. The cliffhanger at the end of the episode is wife about to drink some poison..or will she? I think the baby will get it instead! :o

Iemon likes to think he is tough.Mmm..Poison.

I don't know why this is called Japanese Classic Horror, maybe the horror of it all is to be bored to death! I have a complaint to the fansubbers as well - translate the Honorifics! I know fully well what 'Otou-sama' (Father) means but I'm sure alot of people don't and it loses impact when the poor woman was shouting FATHEEEEERRRRR..but it said Otou-Sama instead!
This is the Feudal Japan's version of Eastenders and Corrie! It was 'Seppuku' itself! Of course they didn't bother to translate that either.. Japanese ritual suicide FTW.

Overall: 4/10

I feel like playing Samurai Warriors now! :o
