Ouran High School Host Club - 01

I predict that this will be the yaoi-fangirl's favourite this season, as it contains every 'type' of bishie apart from emo-slit-my-wrists. Shame! Certainly, it was a lot better than the abomination that was the WORST ANIME OF 2006 (SO FAR) but then again, it would take something truly awful to beat that! Lots of pink walls and blue uniforms depict the 'rich' atmosphere of the wealthy, as the Ouran Host Club use their gay vibes on yaoi-fangirls to make some cash. Fun.

Every fetish for that yaoi fangirl

The premise for this anime is simple: take a postage stamp and write a plot on the back. When done, add yaoi-fangirls and a gay club that caters for their every fetish. Oh and toss in the 'genius' plot twist about an ambiguous girl who knocks over a crappy looking vase worth millions. Instead of being angry, the gay club assume she is really a he and revel in 'him' working for them.

I feel like labelling every picture as GAY.

The Ouran Host Club use their time wasting talents on catering for yaoi fangirls and of course - they make use of their talents so well. The leader is nicknamed King, but for all general purposes I will rename him Queen. He gets the most yaoi-fangirls and is second to none in comparison to the rest of the group. Twincest ahoy for the next duo with rhyming names - Kaoru and Hikaru. The not4chan favourite of shota-loli boy named Honey, complete with pink rampant rabbit and finally the other two whose names I can't remember. I'll call them glasses and KL. They invite otaku geek Haruhi - who knocked over the priceless vase - to see how the wealthy act because Haruhi is... *drumroll* the poorest student in the school. Predictable!

Do you wanna pway with my wabbit? :o

Haruhi makes instant coffee for everyone with onlooking amusement and does some menial tasks for the gay group. Oniisama e angst this ain't, it's not even taken seriously which is perhaps the reason for the postage stamp plot. It gets worse for Haruhi when KL takes off her geeky glasses - they want her to join the Ouran Host Club! Queen is especially impressed by her natural poor looks and demands for Haruhi to pay off her debts by enticing 100 yaoi-fangirls! It's more easier done than said for Haruhi as she gets off to a great start, these yaoi-fangirls are easily pleased! However one yaoi-fangirl nicknamed Princess - in particular, gives Haruhi the cold shoulder, she doesn't like Queen drooling over that n00b.

BEST CHARACTER

The princess yaoi fangirl proceeds to throwing out Haruhi's things out of a window. She really is the best character out of this anime! ;) Haruhi is a bit dismayed by this 'bullying' - oh please, if you want real anime bullying and angst watch Onnisama e! She is about to fish out her things but not before the gay host club finds out that 'he' is infact 'she'. It was an episode of queer eye for the straight guy until then!
Queen was the only one who didn't realise earlier and he acts like a total drama queen. He then decides to help out Haruhi get out her stuff and humiliate Princess for throwing it out. I sense the romance vibes already! Meh.

Haruhi is the best looking out of them all.

If this plays out in typical shoujo fashion the following will probably happen:
- Haruhi will end up with Queen after a catfight with malicious yaoi fangirls
- Princess will find out Haruhi is female and so will the other students - but they don't mind!
- A crisis faces the host club but they will make it through
- A rival club tries to grab Haruhi for themselves

If none of the above do not appear, I will eat my DAS BOOTS!

I enjoyed watching this fun, if shallow slice of shounen-ai subtext-filled comedy. It is well animated, the designs are typical shoujo-style and colourful. The opening and ending songs were not to my taste however, as it sounds just like everything else in the anime world. I see potential in Ouran becoming better if it has more drama and problems. More angst please! If nothing else takes my interest, I'll probably start blogging this. I just hope I won't be that desperate. ;)

Overall: 6/10

To blog or not to blog, that is the question..

Rival club from another school will try to take Haruhi.
I hope they will appear on the show. Their antics are so funny.

If it's based on the manga, no doubt this certain group will be put in to stir things up a bit. ;)
I wonder what they are like? Guess we'll have to wait and see!

If you dont like the review or score... dont flame it and justify your opinion of it.

it's certainly a kick ass show...i saw the episode with the rival school girls. i'd say 8/10, but i'm just into these kind of shows...it is a lot like fruits basket. i compared characters the first time i watched Host Club.

eh, think what you want bout it, i think it's adorably kick ass.

saw up to episode 16 and 17 unsubbed, the funniest anime i've seen in awhile. All the chars can be related to my friends as well which makes it twice as funny, the style is adorible and the voices well suited to the characters.

problem: i dislike the theme song...everyone i know loves it but i think its to sugary, it gave me a fricken cavity. Although the chibi forms are rather cute.

i rate this bad boy a 8/10 based on all the other stupid shojo's i've seen

I like this anime (seen up to ep. 17). For the most part, it's light-hearted amusement, but there are some inklings of angst yet to be explored. For example, the twins; episodes 5 and 16 seem to imply that they have some issues and a creepy codependence with one another.

Kyouya (or "Mother," as Queen --- I mean, Tamaki --- calls him) also seems like he might have more development later. He's a pretty interesting character, especially since ep. 16-17. He's definitely "darker" than the other Hosts.

And I'm getting the Fruits Basket vibe, too. XD Maybe that's why I like, hehe. (Though Fruits Basket is lots more angsty, espeically in the later manga volumes.)

To the user of distasteful language: Feel free to express your opinions...about the ANIME UNDER DISCUSSION. That would be the purpose of this blog. If you do feel the need to leave other subjective remarks, may I suggest the public toilet.

Onwards to the matter at hand.
Ouran High School Host Club is Subarashii!! A little bit of naughty makes for big big laughs;D

I dont really think you can judge an anime based completely on the first episode but that's just my opinion. And the fact that there's barely an ounce of angst in it is pretty refreshing, and the humor is tasteful rather than all out shonen-ai. I love how it actually mocks yaoi fangirls because the club makes money off of them rather than ever getting involved with them. Haruhi is also a refreshing character because she's not nearly as annoying, angsty or hyper active as past anime heros like Sailor Moon's Usagi or even Gundam Wing's infamous yaoi-girl-hearthrobs Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell. I love how mellow she is, almost like a real person and the very idea the anime and manga are based on is creative.

I also love this anime. It cracks me up.

To tell the truth i think that the person who reviewed this anime only reviewed the first ep. I almost didn't continue watching because of the first ep. and i am glad i did! The show really doesn't follow the vibe that the first ep. started with you'd think it was a different director.

I don't think it's right to base an anime or any show off of the first episode, but hey. I've seen up to 23 subbed, and it definitly gets more angsty. I find it interesting that not everything about each character is spilled within the first five minutes of the show. But that's just me.

Actually, I find it strange to read this, it's difficult to judge something from how it starts out, series like Fruits Basket start out rather shallow at first but end up being very deep and thoughtful. As for Ouran, well maybe not 'deep', but it's such a freaking awsome show!!

I've seen up to the second to last episode, and I'm rather sad it's ending, and so what if it does follow some of the typical shoujo forms you've mentioned? it doesn't hurt to cut people some slack!

honestly, I dislike how you constantly mentioned yaoi in this review; Ouran ISN'T yaoi, it's a partially spoof on yaoi fangirlism, it's just another great laugh! get over it ^^;

I'm sorry, but the eating this "Das Boots" drew me in.
Well, I think it depends on when Haruhi did not end up with "Queen". I got "Lord" sometimes. Spoiler:
By the end of the 26 episodes (I haven't read the manga) Haruhi did not end up with "Queen" or with anyone.

So, pepper or salt, mam? Lol

ruinedkuria

I think you are a bit opinionated in your judgement of anime. Granted this is a blog, but just stating your opinions without much else to go one doesn't really do much for me. And I agree with anonymous who says Ouran isn't yaoi. There is barely any yaoi. You're even betting on Haruhi pairing with "Queen"; it's kind of contradictory.
Besides, expecting an anime to just roll out the angst on the first episode probably won't get you much good anime. Even with a story, usu. the good ones have the angst later on when you feel more connected with the characters. It depends more on the story framework than anything else. Besides, Ouran is more of a comedy. It does have its angst, but what you are asking for is unreasonable.

ok you're totally making yourself a target for criticism by fans of this anime. for one thing you're too biased. majority of your comments diss it and a fraction of practically (non-existent recommendation). It's not really all that yaoi. besides the yaoi only exists with the twins, WHO do it for fun to attract the crazy girls IN the anime. My friend and i really like this anime and we're not yaoi crazed fangirls, we're actually quite homophobic. My cousin also likes this anime and he's a straight guy. Yeah so the next time you wanna introduce an anime, you can't diss it straight out, that's slander,(though unlikely) in which you can get sued for.

while you are entitled to your own opinion, i dont think you should be writing a review based upon seeing only the first episode. if you look at the first episode of any anime, its different from the rest of it. it sets up the plot and introduces important details. and its for a more comedy-based series rather than a more dramatic setting, though there is a lot of angst later in the series (ive seen the entire thing through three times). it follows a different setup than any anime i have seen, and its most definetly one of the better ones out there.
