The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - 01

This could well be on it's way on topping my worst anime of 2006 and it's not even halfway through the year yet! Take a reject from "Key-rape" Kagihime, throw in some MOE (lots of it) and two loser ero-guys who are making a pr0n RPG hentai. A home grown family movie this ain't - it's an otaku's wet dream come true. The melancholy part of the title, only applies to us poor souls that have to endure this crap! Truly, a stroke of genius on the creator's behalf by warning us!

Playboy Bunny - MOE style.

We delve into this peep-show by completely ignoring that tone-deaf title sequence. The singing is bad on purpose, but if it was tolerable it wouldn't be 'funny'. The thing is: Haruhi Suzumiya is not even humourous - not in the slightest. It's closer akin to being a borefest with the monologues of the narrator - who is a complete perv - as we later find out. He's trying to make a home movie and this is it:
This sad, sad tale starts off with Playboy Bunny looking perfectly MOE and teary eyed. Just how we like them! Her name doesn't really matter as the camera pans onto her two airbags more than her face. I'll name them me-bouncy which is probably more memorable. So there she is - me-bouncy, selling some goods in her outfit and showing no discount to her male fans. The horror. Cue panning shot of her running at least 4 times through the shopping district for boobage shots. Once the narrator thinks he has enough (once wasn't!), he lets me-bouncy go home and do a striptease.

At this moment, I needed to turn off this anime to rinse out my eyes.

We are introduced to the next character in this story, as me-bouncy got changed into her Variable Geo styled outfit - complete with baggage. This new character is Love-sim reject number 2 complete with no personality and crappy looking hat. Kids and their RPG fetishes! Me-bouncy slurs out some mumbo-jumbo and proceeds to insult Sailor Moon by copying her pose! Love-sim reject 2 is not impressed and boringly beats her up with her vibrating star wand. *yawn* But what have we here? Ero-guy appears and lifts up me-bouncy to a bed as the narrator curses him to death like as if it was important. "Me-bouncy's airbags was checked over for any punctures" should be the disclaimer for the end of his pr0n movie!

LOADED

Narrator/Director isn't happy and we swiftly move onto the next scene. Me-Bouncy has some new equipment to make her look more scary than ever before. All hail: Me-Bouncy-Gunz as she gets all teary eyed again and sounds sooo convincing to Love-Sim Reject 2! But to add in variety we get B-movie zombies than actually are better actors than the main characters of this pr0n movie. Way to go!
By this moment my eyes was rolling back from utter and sheer boredom. It's certainly a good alternative to use instead of sleeping pills. If only it was as entertaining to boot!

Ero guy says: Your hands need to be lower down for pleasure than can measure.

A few blank shots later, we swing onto the school grounds. Pr0n movie making holds no bounds! Me-Bouncy, Love Sim Reject 2 and B-movie zombie make their moves onto ero guy- who is obviously enjoying all the attention. They all catfight over him and proceed to the roof and call out to the aliens (the people who made this and thought it was cool) and cue RPG style muuzak. Yay. Talking cats are used as props as well, I wouldn't let Ero guy near them just to be on the safe side.
Eventually all the rejects go into the film room to review the masterpiece and laugh hysterically at it's badness. So let's review: moe, fanservice , booby bags , moe, Love-Sim Reject, moe, fight, moe, fanservice, ero-guy, moe, monologues, moe, zombies, fanservice, moe, b-movie zombies, more, final battle, rpg muuzak, fanservice, beastility and cat moe. 4-channers would think this anime is made out of win!

A suicide movie would be so fitting right now!

I think Haruhi Suzumiya is on par with Honey & Clover and ARIA for the boring factor. There can't be anything worse than non-entertaining anime! Even Violence Jack is more watchable than this drivel. The peep-show idea theme is plain wrong, the main character of me-bouncy is MOE material and as for the rest - I couldn't care less. However, I will give an extra point for being a little bit original. I'm generous.

Overall: 2/10

Straight to the crap pile.

The anime bored me to death, I wrote how I felt. If you don't like what write, then don't read. ;)
However, a masterpiece is what a general concenus defines as being great. I don't think a guy running a peep-show is first class material.
Thanks for your comments, I enjoyed getting a good laugh from them. :P

Not everyone has the same taste in humour. My blog is 'refreshingly honest' and if that makes me unpopular, then so be it!
Read another blog who claims that this anime is good - if it makes you feel better. I certainly won't be changing because of one reader. An anonymous user, saying I suck over one blog post really says it all. I don't think I need to explain myself over flames.
Constructive comments please! ;)

Well... constructive criticism... well... judging your own work as "refreshingly honest" shows a severe amount of hubris on your part. Honest, maybe... but refreshing? I'd check your ego before reviewing more anime. Have we not learned anything from the antics of "Comic Book Guy" on Simpsons???

... did you actually even understand ANY of the dialogue in the episode?

It's fine if you don't like the show, but at least know what to hate it for. It's a parody for Christ's sake. If thats beyond your comprehension, look it up in a dictionary then go get a sub and at least understand what they're saying.

I hate to flame like this, but this has to be one of the best animes I've seen in years and to see someone hate the show would be an injustice to humanity. Haruhiism banzai!

Ok, techinically the episode you "critiqued" was episode 0. It has nothing to do with the series other than to satiate the hunger of a few crazed otaku in Japan and get people mildly interested in the show (it's called a viral to the rest of us.)

To critique Haruhi based on episode 0 seems a little ignorant but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you didn't know.

But anyway, at least check out episode 2 on youtube.com subbed and see for yourself. It's actually one of the best anime to come out this spring, regardless of how strange and boring episode 0 is. For the record I too thought episode 0 sucked and was boring, but I realized it was meerely a satire of otaku home-grown video and nerdiness in Japan. And you probably might want to make sure you know everything about a series before critiquing it because all your peers on the internet think this is the best thing to come from Japan in awhile.

Personally "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" is a delightful romp in weird anime otaku-dom that borderlines between "Genshiken" and "The X-Files". Anyone who enjoys conspiracy stories, giant robots, magical girls, aliens and even a bit of Shoujo will revel in delight of Haruhi's adventures.

As far as writing goes this series is top-notch. The characters are extremely well written and have some of the best banter in an anime I've seen thus far. The characters aren't your typical "Genshiken" otaku either. Something of a different breed more wild and outright strange no matter what circle you're from (borderline insanity.)

So here's my review of Haruhi. It is a bit strange in it's presentation and it's definately not for everyone but if you can get past the obscure virals you'll definately enjoy this series.

Not all the 'special effects' in episode 0 are 'fake', btw. I wonder if anyone else caught this.

Also it was clear that this is episode

Wow...you completely missed the point of this episode. As someone else already said, look up the word "parody" in a dictionary...because you obviously don't know what it means. It would be one thing if you said you didn't like how the parody was made, but instead you just complain about jiggly boobs like the actual director of the real series put them in there just for him, and that such-and-such a character is a cliche. And yet, after sitting through that entire episode, during which at some point you should have have this blinding flash of comprehension that it was about a bunch of students making an unintentionally horrible movie, you still can't figure it out after the director is shown onscreen talking about the movie they just made. Pare-oh-dee. Look it up. Really.

I'm not quite sure on what your definition of "drivel" is. Why is this anime so bad? The first ten seconds makes it obvious that the whole episode was a satire pointing out the absurdity of other shonen anime - plots that don't make any sense at all, conveniently placed characters and scenes, super-short skirts that always cover one's undies, etc. Everything you criticized and marked "bad" was done so purposefully. SATIRE. If you really couldn't figure it out through the mock-movie, the ending after the "credits" gave it all away, which is where the real series begins. I don't think your blog is not "refreshingly honest." It's just plain misguided.

And you really shouldn't judge an anime by its first episode. I have no idea why you thought this first episode sucked, but a good example of great-series-with-lackluster-introduction would be Gungrave.

And don't be offended with this comment. It was intended to criticise your review (and attempt to englighten you), not your character.

u do understand that a satire must contain a sense of absurdity in order for it to be taken properly by readers right? in addition, what's supposed to happen is that in satires the authors are not supposed to agree with what they're writing.

The fact that ur post lacks these two qualities gives the impression that ur intentions were not satirical, but simply idiotic. as constructive criticism that ur requesting for, i'd say u rethink ur writing methods if u were ever to attempt this form of reviewing again.

First of all, I am not an idiot. I don't like this anime, I shouldn't need to agree with everyone else. An idiot is someone who would jump off a cliff, because everyone else was doing it.

"as constructive criticism that ur requesting for, i'd say u rethink ur writing methods if u were ever to attempt this form of reviewing again."

I think having the "first episode" kin to a totally different style to the rest of the anime is a mistake.
Obviously it's a jump at doing something different in the structure, and the "film"'s place in the story will surely make sense later on when the SOS Brigade progresses.

I think the review was a fair attempt at objectively assesing the episode. However, it wasn't exactly painful to watch...and it was fairly apparent at the end that it was merely an "intro" to what could be a very good show.

(PS: "Refreshingly honest"!!?......that's exceptionally arrogant. This is a standard review blogg. With subpar rantings......I WANT BLOOD!!!!!)

I've never posted a reply to a blog before and don't intend to in the future resulting in this being an anonymous comment. I hope you won't pass it over because it is anonymous

I have recently finished watching the whole anime twice and am reading what's translated of the light novels that this show was based on, as well as reading what others have to say about TMHS.

Had I watched the first episode as you had, I may have had the same opinion as you, but when I saw the preview picture on YouTube I had thought it was a low quality version of the real ep1 so I skipped to ep2 in hopes of finding a better quality ep1 in the future.

When I read your blog, I get the feeling that you didn't watch the entire episode because if you did, you would've noticed that on first viewing ep1 has almost nothing to do with the series as a whole. Did you know that the whole series is not in chronological order. It's like one of those sci-fi movies which start at the middle and end at the beginning.

Indeed let me spoil it a bit more, that episode is actually episode 11 of 14 if counted in linear chronological order. And the opening movie is actually, as the narrarator states in a conversation between the witch and the male lead, a foreshadowing for the entire series. If I may go a bit further, you would need to risk that permanent damage to taste to get the true meaning of this homemade video.

Indeed upon further thought, the joke's on you kind sir. This show is meant for those of open and analytical minds. It's meant to throw off those who aren't willing to sit through the mindlessness to get to the meat. Perhaps you are just not the target audience. Unconventional yes, but this isn't the show for mindless viewers, it's the type that gathers an occult like following.

In any case, the show is brilliant by my standards, and can be seen that way by most since all 14 episodes have been released. The animation is crisp, the narraration witty, and the story makes me laugh hysterically one moment while puts me deep in thought the next. It's the type of show where if there would be a major on Japanese animation a decade from now, the analysis of this show would warrant a doctorate thesis paper.

Whether or not you watch it is something I could care less about, but reading this sludge after watching only one episode shows how little patience you must have. You want satisfaction and you want it now, and now your opinion may drive potential viewers away.

You say a masterpiece is something the general describes as great. With the show barely over, just give it some time and it may enter the halls of the great.

It seems like you haven't seen past the first episode. The first episode also gave me a big wtf. The entire series is not like what you saw in the first episode. You'll understand what that mess was if you watch on. I was recommended to watch the anime in this order episode 2,3,4,1 then the rest in normal episode order. I'm glad I did because if just saw the first episode I would feel the same way you did. You'll be confused at some points but the anime comes together very nicely.

It's actually wierd as I think the first episode felt like a very odd OVA. You don't judge a movie based on the first 30 seconds so I think you should at least watch the 2nd episode and give it a shot.

it reminded me of fooly cooly a TON a young girl (haruhi) a total phyco the cause of a crazy splash in poor Kyon(?)'s tranquil normalcy

kinda like Takun and The crazy pink haired alien huh? (sorry forgot her name...starts with an H i think)

frankly I can't see why you should judge anything based on only one episode. though a parody blog on a parody seems an interesting thought you need to make this clear to your readers or else it will get alot of comments like the ones above...

I've never seen the anime myself though I do plan on Downloading and watching it. First thing that brought me to this site would be my finding of an animated gif image I found some time earlier. then I learned the name of the series and it brought me her :)

I agree, you are entitled to your own opinion, however perhaps a bit of lighter reading and less harshness may have shown your readers that you were writing a parodial blog...

Also not all anime has to be violent or easily understood.

anime's such as dot.hack//sign and Elfen Lied are hard to understand unless you watch them in their entirety. some people hate the ending to Elfen lied but when you actually look at what's being said you will realize that some of the best novels ever written were ended exactly the same way. personally I like originality, I will try to find this anime and watch it :)

Also, if you think this was hentai/pr0n, you need to watch some other animes. This doesn't even come CLOSE to hentai or even ecchi (close to porn, but not).
Anyways, despite this mediocre episode, watch the rest of the series, it really is a masterpiece. And no, none of the eps are even close to how ep 1 is...they are a mix between scifi and school life.

HaruhiHater here. IMO, "Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" would've been FAR better, if around 10 mins of the first ep, someone had slapped that evil little bitch Haruhi & told her not to be a selfish, self-centred, obnoxious COW! She has to be THE most UNLIKEABLE anime character since Asuka Langley in "NGE". And in before 'Oh, but you're not a TRUE "MOHS" fan - you don't GET IT!'. I DO 'get it' - I only wish Haruhi would 'get' AIDS & DIE. This series has suffered from what I call 'Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome' (certainly for TOO long!)- well, I'm like the little boy who says 'The Emperor's Naked!', and "MOHS", at least the main character, I HATE. I'll only watch it again, if it's completely redone & Haruhi is a NICE character - at least I'd be able to EMPATHISE with her, as is what's supposed to happen with the protagonists in a story.

First of all, i think goodonu for going against the main-stream,

but 2nd of all, whats the point in writing a review on one episode(as lots of people said), isnt the the review more about u (or getting attention), rather than the anime
(i hope that didnt sound mean)...
but then again i liked ure review

Some people really need chill pills.

I love Haruhi but people are clearly entitled to dislike it. Your world would not collapse in some dramatic warped style as if Haruhi willed it to be. :|

I couldn't even get through the first episode, I just couldn't watch it. But apparently it gets better...?

Do I have to watch the first episode to understand the second one? I want to give thie anime a try but I honestly really don't want to finish the first episode.

I realize this post is older, but hopefully someone can answer this for me! :)

Now, I don't agree with you at all on this.
However, I'm not going to tell you that you're an idiot or anything. If that's your opinion, fine.
I personally adore this anime with every fiber of my being. I do think KyoAni made a very bad decision by making the movie the first episode, and you're the proof.
The poor quality turned a lot of people off.
Heck, I can't even remember why I decided to keep watching to the first episode (Chronological order, I mean.) and the whole entire thing. However, I ended up loving every second of it.

My only real suggestion is too rethink your definition of 'refreshing'. It is not refreshing to bash and anime within an inch of it's life.
